The winter holidays are over, so are our days of eating, drinking, resting, and generally being merry and carefree. Let's face it: many of us start the new year with a strong sense that we need a general reset.
A January detox.
A dry January.
A Veganuary.

The yogic principle of saucha, usually translated as 'purity', teaches us that cleanliness goes far beyond a daily shower. It invites us to purify the body from the inside out. And not only the body, but also our thoughts, our environment, and our relationships. This holistic approach to cleanliness is a crucial step towards cultivating the focus and clarity we need to operate at a higher level, both personally and professionally.
"Upon the purification of the mind, [one attains] cheerfulness, one-pointedness, sense control, and fitness to perceive the self." - Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2.41
This sutra reminds us is that having a clean body, mind and environment is the prerequisite to maintaining the focus and clarity we need not just to achieve our professional goals but also to progress on our path towards self-awareness and personal growth. Since it is such an important foundation for the work ahead, saucha is the first of the five niyamas, the personal observances that guide our relationship with ourselves.
Purifying the Body
⛔ Reduce or avoid toxins
Limit or completely avoid substances such as alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. These disrupt the nervous system, often leading to irritability and emotional reactivity, which can undermine your ability to lead with calm authority, kindness and empathy.
🥦 Nourish yourself with a clean diet
Prioritise freshly prepared meals made from whole, seasonal ingredients. Aim to “eat the rainbow”, ensuring a wide range of nutrients, and minimise ultra-processed foods.
Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, recommends a sattvic diet. Sattvic foods carry the quality of 'goodness' and they helps maintain optimal energy, clarity and balance.
Rajasic foods carry the quality of 'passion', and they tend to be overly salty, very spicy, or stimulating (including caffeine). These can push the body into overdrive, leading to anger, aggression and frustration, therefore they are best consumed in moderation.
Tamasic foods carry the quality of 'ignorance', leading to laziness, inertia and a dull mind. Examples include meat, heavily processed and frozen food, and alcohol.
Your brain consumes about 400-500 calories daily, so keep it well fed and alert. Nourishment is key to maintain the high level of energy and vitality to fuel your leadership powerhouse.
💅 Reduce external toxins
Take a closer look at the ingredients in your personal care and beauty products. Exploring natural, toxin-free alternatives – such as herbal hair colours or pure organic shea butter for skincare – can significantly reduce the chemical load on your body.
😴 Honour rest and sleep
Maintain a healthy sleep routine to allows your body to rejuvenate. Never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep in helping you show up focused and grounded, and being on your A game at work the following day.

Purifying the Environment
It is difficult to remain focused and clear-headed when your surroundings are cluttered, noisy, or constantly competing for your attention. An organised environment supports an organised mind.
If you are struggling to find the time for housekeeping, consider experimenting with methods such as FlyLady, which breaks down house cleaning into manageable, daily 15-minute tasks using a "zone cleaning" system, daily routines (morning/evening), and "Hot Spot" decluttering to help overwhelmed individuals build consistent habits, focusing on progress over perfection.
And what better time to establish a new habit than January? New year, new rhythms!
Purifying the Mind
One of my favourite mindfulness meditation exercises invites us to visualise our mind as a vast blue sky, with thoughts appearing like clouds. Rather than engaging with them, we simply notice them and allow them to drift past.
The clouds are not the sky.
Your thoughts are not your mind.
They are not you.
Building on this exercise, take a moment to notice your thought-clouds against the beautiful blank canvas of your mind.
If your inner sky is constantly filled with toxic, dark, heavy storm clouds, how can you attain the clarity to nurture big projects, or warm the people around you like the rays of the sun?
What shape do your clouds take? Guilt, anger, negative self-talk, victimhood or anything else? Identifying and dissolving these patterns takes time and effort. But after all, yoga is all about the practice and the journey itself, not about teleporting to the destination!

Purifying Relationships
Purifying our body, mind and environment requires daily discipline, but at least these are largely within our control.
Unlike relationships.
By definition, relationships feature at least one more human being, with their thoughts, words, actions, emotions and behaviour, all of which lie outside our control. So how to go about purifying our relationships?
First, by admitting and accepting that you have no control over them, you cannot change and fix them. Letting go of this illusion of control is challenging, especially for high achievers. As the hugely successful The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins explains, the foundations of a healthy relationship rest on a clear distinction between 'let them' and 'let me'.
Second, being pure with another person is being fully present with them. Being fully available, without multitasking or checking a phone, is a profound act of respect. This is why regular one-to-one meetings between managers and direct reports are so valuable. Even if operational issues can be addressed via email or a quick chat, dedicating uninterrupted time to one another builds trust, psychological safety, and genuine connection.
And finally, purifying relationships means viewing others through clean lenses that are free from the stains of our own fears, self-doubt and unconscious biases.
"Whatever form purification takes, it always begins with an intention to 'lighten' the load you are carrying." - The Yamas&Niyamas by Deborah Adele
Reducing toxins in the body, decluttering your space and quietening harmful mental chatter all help to lighten that load and let you move into ease. From this place of greater ease, clarity naturally arises, allowing you to focus on what truly matters, for yourself and for those you lead.
Thank you very much for reading, have a wonderful week ahead.
The light in me honours the light in you.
