Find a comfortable seat, close your eyes, and imagine a stereotypical Yogi. Selfless, calm, peaceful, healthy and active, leading a simple life with few material goods. Now imagine a business leader. Stressed, selfish, unhealthy and sedentary, hoarding gadgets and other material goods.

However, the boundary is actually blurred.

Yogis and spiritual leaders from both the East and the West have started global movements, attracting masses to their teaching, and have actually built successful businesses.

So why couldn't business leaders incorporate yogic qualities?

Ever since I started working, I have always understood that stress or well-being at work affects our mental health, and in turn our mental health affects our team morale and productivity. When I became a leader, it was an eye-opening moment to realise how much impact I have not just on my direct reports, but the people they themselves do or will manage. It also impacts their family and friends because they bring their work home, emotionally. So I had to ask myself:

What kind of impact do I want to have as a leader?

I decided to seek ways to develop an authentic and mindful leadership style, drawing inspiration from my journey as a yoga practitioner and teacher, which had already inevitably influenced my people management approach.

I understand that in the daily rush to "get things done", it can be challenging to integrate meaningful principles into leadership. It is all too easy to fall back into familiar, often ineffective patterns, missing opportunities for growth and damaging team dynamics and efficiency in the long run.

There is a beautiful alternative.
